Laser cutters should be properly grounded during usage. If you experience static shocks when operating the machine, it is possible that the three-prong socket is not properly grounded.
Due to the design mechanism of the laser tube, there has to be a slight controlled leakage of electricity for the tube to function properly. If the machine is properly grounded, you will not experience the electric shocks. In addition, this situation may vary between different people, due to different body sensitivity to electricity. This is a common situation, so rest assured.
Some sockets either do not have a grounding design, or that the third prong does not fully exert its grounding function. You can look to the following methods to resolve the static issues:
- DIY grounding – Use a 3-to-2 converter, and connect the grounding point of the converter to a metal part of your building (Ex. pipes, windowsills). By doing so, you can achieve a near-grounding effect.
- Unable to DIY – Try reverse-plugging the prongs into the socket, that is to say, switch the live wire and naught wire. By doing so, there is a certain chance of reducing static shocks.
- Avoid being barefoot – Wearing shoes while operating also reduces the chance of static shocks.
