#910 Z-axis Homing Fail

Description

The cause of the Z-axis homing issue could be complex. Different symptoms relate to it, such as the system failing, the laser head won't move up or down at all, the top limit switch is down, etc. Please refer to the following steps to troubleshoot the Z-axis issue.

Possible causes

  1. The system fails (Re-update the firmware or reflash RK board.)
  2. The mainboard/MB/motherboard is malfunctioning.
  3. The vertical(Z-axis) "Top" limit switch is malfunctioning.
  4. The Z-axis step motor is malfunctioning. (Less likely)

Step 1

Lower the laser head and use a small piece of paper to test the Z-axis limit switch to see if the icon can be changed in the control mode.

 

Determine the test result and the next action to take.

  • The Z-axis icon can be changed as in the video >> Step 2
  • The Z-axis icon is always "CLOSE" >> Step 1.1
  • The Z-axis icon is always "OPEN" >> Step 1.1
  • The laser head cannot be lowered >> Step 1.1

Step 1.1

  • Test the Z-axis icon again with a piece of paper.

Determine the test result and the next action to take.

  • The Z-axis icon can be changed as in the video >> Step 2
  • The Z-axis icon is always "CLOSE" >> Record a video and contact us
    • Possible casues:
      • AF board (Z-axis limit switch) is down
      • Mainboard is down
      • Z-axis board is down
      • 20-pin cable is down
      • Other relating cable(s) is down
  • The Z-axis icon is always "OPEN" >>  Record a video and contact us
    • Possible casues:
      • AF board (Z-axis limit switch) is down
      • Mainboard is down
      • Z-axis board is down
      • 20-pin cable is down
      • Other relating cable(s) is down
  • The laser head cannot be lowered >> Step 1.2

Step 1.2

Manually rotate the rod to lower or raise the laser head.

 

Determine the test result and the next action to take.

  • The laser head can be lowered >> Step 1.3
  • The laser head cannot be lowered  >> Record a video and contact us
    • Possible casues:
      • Mainboard is down
      • Z-axis board is down
      • Z-axis motor is down
      • Other relating cable(s) is down

Step 1.3

Try Z-axis homing and see if it works.

 

Determine the test result and the next action to take.

  • The Z-axis homing is working fine now >> Step 1.3
  • The Z-axis homing is still having an issue >> Step 1

Step 2

Raise the laser head and see if the machine itself can trigger the Z-axis icon.

 

Determine the test result and the next action to take.

  • The Z-axis icon can be triggered to close and the laser stops automatically >> Step 2.3
  • The Z-axis icon cannot be triggered and the laser does not stop when it reaches the top >>
    Record a video and contact us
    • Possible casues:
      • AF board (Z-axis limit switch) is down
      • The laser head might be deformed so the Z-axis limit switch cannot be triggered physically
  • The laser head cannot be raised >> Step 2.1

Step 2.1

  • Test the Z-axis icon again.

Determine the test result and the next action to take.

  • The Z-axis icon can be triggered to close and the laser stops automatically >> Step 2.3
  • The Z-axis icon cannot be triggered and the laser does not stop when it reaches the top >>
    Record a video and contact us
    • Possible casues:
      • AF board (Z-axis limit switch) is down
      • The laser head might be deformed so the Z-axis limit switch cannot be triggered physically
  • The laser head cannot be raised >> Step 2.2

Step 2.2

Manually rotate the rod to lower or raise the laser head.

 

Determine the test result and the next action to take.

  • The laser head can be raised >> Step 2
  • The laser head cannot be raised  >> Record a video and contact us
    • Possible casues:
      • AF board (Z-axis limit switch) is down
      • Mainboard is down
      • Z-axis board is down
      • Z-axis motor is down
      • Other relating cable(s) is down

Step 2.3

Try Z-axis homing and see if it works.

 

Determine the test result and the next action to take.

  • The Z-axis homing is working fine now >>  Problem Solved
  • The Z-axis homing is still having an issue >> Record a video and contact us
    • Possible casues:
      • Z-axis homing calculation may be lost or corrupted.
